Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean are back in Nottingham for the Dancing on Ice Tour and before the skating began yesterday local school children met the skating stars at the National Ice Centre.
The pair presented children from Blue Bell Hill School of Ice with a specially engraved glass trophy.
The youngsters, aged between 3 – 11 years old, received the trophy on behalf of the school to mark their continued success through education and ice skating.
Blue Bell Hill Primary School in St Anns was identified as ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted in 2008 and they were recently rated as the number one school in the country for progress.
They officially became the NIC’s School of Ice on the 16th December 2009 and this fantastic partnership has enabled all the children to learn to ice skate with some of the best coaches in the country using the first class facilities in Nottingham – the ‘home’ of Torvill and Dean.
Jayne Torvill said: “We are extremely proud of the achievements of Blue Bell Hill Primary School and the National Ice Centre. This wonderful partnership has provided all the children and their families great access to education and ice sports within the community. It’s fantastic to see so many local youngsters enjoying skating and who knows, one day they could be at the Olympics themselves!”
The glass trophy will be displayed in the school’s new entrance when it is officially opened to the public in September 2010.
Matt Bradbury, Sports Development Officer at the NIC said: “Over the past few years we really have seen the children, the school and the staff become part of the National Ice Centre family. The activities engage the children, creating a positive impact and assist in raising a child’s self esteem giving them a long lasting positive experience. All NIC staff involved get a real buzz working alongside Blue Bell Hill as our partnership goes from strength to strength.”
Nic Williams, Strategic Support Manager at Blue Bell Hill said: “The children are so excited that Torvill and Dean are giving their seal of approval to the School of Ice. We are already hoping to find the next skating stars from here within our school.”
